" Indianapolis Race Review"

What an interesting day! The Nascar Cup Series visited the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course; located in Indianapolis, Indiana for the “ Verizon 200 at the Brickyard”. In an upset alert A.J. Allmendinger wins the prestigious Brickyard 400. This is his 1st of the season and second of his career.

Today was wild. From wrecks, track changes, to uncertainty and a brand new race track to the yearly schedule, this race weekend screamed chaos. That is what I’d described today. With numerous cautions throughout the race and most coming in the closing laps, today was a demolition derby. Nascar’s officiating today was terrible, cautions could have been avoided easily. But Nascar let the drivers race, until the big one happened. You couldn’t look away from your TV today without something happening, that describes this afternoon. It’s wildly entertaining, but not good for the owners or race teams. In these images below you can see what led to what.

                                                                                                       (The Aftermath of the wreck)

The significance of today’s race winner is huge. A.J. Allmendinger doesn’t compete full time in this series. He competes full time in the Xfinity Series; he only competes in Cup when the Nascar Cup Series attends road courses and superspeedways. Meaning he just stole a win away from someone else full time in the series, but also other drivers that need a win for the playoffs. Meaning one race win is wasted for some drivers that need it. But how Allmendinger won was wild. The leader and the second place car, which was Denny Hamlin and Chase Briscoe, wrecked. Briscoe turned Hamlin going for the win, but he wasn’t informed he had a penalty for cutting the course until after. Meaning if you cut the road course, you have a penalty, forcing you to come down pit road and stop. But with Briscoe not knowing, he was going for the win and turned the leader. By doing so, this handed A.J. Allmendinger the win. But luckily for Denny Hamlin, his performance all season puts him in the playoffs on points, not by winning. This proves, consistency is key all the time.

Let’s talk about today’s race overall. In my opinion, today’s race was good. With all the beat up and destroyed race cars, it’s not something you want to see. But the thrill and the on your edge of your seat racing, it was good. It made you want to watch the race, it was a first time track for Cup drivers, so it was interesting. As a race fan, you wanted to watch today. Nascar’s officiating created some head scratchers today, but this can be dealt with accordingly. What this also does, it sets up a storyline for the next 2 races, until September and most importantly the playoffs. So overall, I give today’s race a 9 out of 10. I would recommend to Nascar to bring this race weekend back in the foreseeable future for next year and beyond.

As the week's countdown, the Playoffs are emerging. 2 more race weekend’s left, Michigan and Daytona. This weekend the Nascar Cup Series will head to Michigan International Speedway, located in Brooklyn, Michigan for the “ FireKeepers Casino 400”. This is a unique track but also has unique storylines heading into this weekend. The playoffs are near, the summer is almost over, September is approaching. We will see what happens next. Tune in at 3:00pm Sunday August 22nd, only on NBCSN.
