Road America Race Review

Road America!  The Nascar Cup Series visited Road America, located in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for the 4th of July weekend!  Tyler Reddick takes home the checkered flag, after a thiller battle for the win. Tyler Reddick was 18th in the playoffs standings entering this afternoon, he now sits 7th after picking up the win.  Tyler Reddick picks up the first win for Richard Childress Racing in nearly two years.  The last win for Richard Childress Racing came in July of 2020 at Texas Motor Speedway with teammate Austin Dillon.  Reddick is also the first winner in the #8 car since Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the year 2006 at Richmond Raceway. Since then, it has been 16 years since that victorious day until Tyler Reddick crossed the line as today’s winner.

(Tyler Reddick Post-Race)

Tyler Reddick battled with Chase Elliott throughout the closing laps of today’s race.  With this being a 14-turn track, both drivers had strong areas of the course as others didn’t.  Both drivers gave it their best shot for today’s win.  Elliott comes up just short of his 3rd win of the 2022 season, as Reddick passed him cleanly and rode off to victory.  Elliott tried to make it close by closing in each time at certain points of the track, but it wasn’t enough in the end.  Chase Elliott settles for 2nd, he dominated all day until the final stage.

Let’s rewind to stage 1, with Chase Elliott leading the field to the green flag.  Elliott ran strong pretty much the entire day. Besides the pit road cycles, Elliott ran inside the top-10 all day.  But due to a late stage charge by Chase Briscoe, the driver of the #14 grabbed the stage 1 victory.  Chase Briscoe went on to finish 14th for Stewart-Haas Racing.  Ryan Blaney won stage 2, as the positive momentum continues for Ryan Blaney’s team with an 11th-place finish.

(A look at the playoff standings post Road America)

Drivers who had great races today were Kyle Larson, Ross Chastain, Daniel Suarez, Chris Buescher, Austin Cindric, Michael McDowell, AJ Allmendinger, and Kevin Harvick.  Coming into today, Kyle Larson was riding the momentum of a great finish at Nashville.  Larson continued that by running in the top-10, Larson comes home 4th.  Ross Chastain ran great today, and so did his Trackhouse Racing teammate Daniel Suarez.  Chastain finished 4th, as teammate Daniel Suarez finished 5th.  Sixth place went to Chris Buescher, of RFK Racing.  Buescher, one of the better drivers on road courses ran a solid race and racked up a great finish heading into Atlanta.  Austin Cindric finished 7th, as teammate Joey Logano struggled, Cindric was a bright spot today with a top-ten finish.  Michael McDowell one of the heavily underrated drivers in the Cup Series finished 8th.  McDowell is on the podium when it comes to road course racing in Nascar.  He continues to deliver each weekend for FrontRow Motorsports, once again today, he does that heading into Atlanta.  Ninth place goes to AJ Allmendinger, for Kaulig Racing.  Allmendinger runs on a part-time schedule in the #16, when Allmendinger has taken the wheel, he’s been great.  Kevin Harvick finished 10th for Stewart Haas Racing, he rounds out your top-10.  Harvick ran a solid race, but with Tyler Reddick’s win today, he is now 20 points out from the playoffs.  He will need to win a race here with Christopher Bell positioned in 16th on the cutline running well.  Atlanta, New Hampshire, Pocono, Indianapolis, Michigan, Richmond, Watkins Glen, and Daytona are the remaining races until the playoffs.  Honorable mentions go out to Martin Truex Jr. who finished 13th.  Cole Custer gets the second shout out, after having a horrendous season, he comes home 15th.  Finally, Joey Hand with a 21st place finish.  A part-time driver for Rick Ware Racing finished 2nd in stage 2.  For a Rick Ware Racing car, that is completely unexpected, Joey Hand deserves a shout out as he ran well.  Hand qualified 9th, and finished 21st for Rick Ware Racing in just his 4th

career start in the Nascar Cup Series.

Drivers who had days to forget were Bubba Wallace, Kyle Busch, Aric Almirola, Brad Keselowski, and Joey Logano.  Bubba Wallace was off course three times today for 23XI Racing. Wallace started 25th and finished 35th.  A superspeedway in Atlanta Motor Speedway is up next where Wallace runs great on restrictor-plate races.  Look out for Bubba Wallace’s #23 for 23XI Racing as a potential race winner next weekend.  Kyle Busch started 13th and finished 29th.  Kyle Busch didn’t run well, along with the rest of Toyota as a manufacturer.  The highest finishing car besides Martin Truex Jr. in 13th was Denny Hamlin in 17th.  Toyota must rebound heading into Atlanta next weekend.  Aric Almirola finished 28th.  Almirola was no where to be found throughout today’s field, a day to forget is all written over Almirola’s performance.  Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano didn’t run well.  Keselowski finished 33rd, while Logano finished 27th to round out drivers who struggled.

In my opinion, today was good at Road America.  We saw a different 1st-time winner, which is always good to see.  Races are starting to countdown until the season finale in Daytona, Atlanta is up next.  We’ll most likely see a different winner next weekend in Atlanta, to continue the different winners as we are now at 13 this season.  Road America produced and should earn its 4th of July weekend slot back on the schedule next year in 2023.  Taking all action into consideration, I’d rate today’s action a 8.9 out of 10.
