Kansas 2 Race Review and Analysis

In the heartland once again!  The Nascar Cup Series visited Kansas Speedway, located in Kansas City, Kansas for the Hollywood Casino 400.  Bubba Wallace for 23XI Racing takes home the checkered flag in Kansas.  This is Wallace’s 2nd career win and 1st of the 2022 season.  Wallace collects 23XI Racing”s second win of the season, third win as an organization, and second win at Kansas Speedway this year.  Kurt Busch won at Kansas back in May, Wallace does it here today in September.  Wallace also becomes the 18th different winner this season, although this win doesn’t couldn’t towards the playoffs.

Let’s go through the playoff field.  Denny Hamlin finishes 2nd for Joe Gibbs Racing, after a long afternoon.  It was a rebound weekend for Hamlin, after a 25th position qualifying effort.  Hamlin sits above the cutline here heading into Bristol.  Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing in an impressive afternoon finishes 3rd.  Bell is the only driver locked in mathematically on points.  Even without a win, Bell ran stellar enough to lock himself into the round of 12.  Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports finished 4th.  Bowman stated up front all after, for a great finish.  William Byron, also of Hendrick Motorsports finished 6th.  Byron ran solid all afternoon, and it paid off for a great finish.  Seventh place goes to Ross Chastain of Trackhouse Racing.  Chastain ran strong and showed up towards the end.  Kyle Larson for Hendrick Motorsports finished 8th.  Larson ran alright this afternoon in Kansas, as he collects a solid finish.  Ryan Blaney finished 9th for Team Penske.  Blaney ran strong in stages 1, and 2, he ran well towards the end.  Daniel Suarez of Trackhouse Racing finished 10th.  Suarez stayed around 10th for most of today.  Chase Elliott on a rebounding day finished 11th.  Elliott fought hard all day, for a good finish.  Austin Cindric of Team Penske finished 12th, and Cindric has been consistent as of recent.  Chase Briscoe for Stewart-Haas Racing, had a rebound weekend after Darlington.  He must keep that going heading into Bristol.  Austin Dillon finished 14th for Richard Childress Racing.  Dillon showed speed in qualifying, which showed today as well.  Joey Logano finished 17th, for Team Penske after fighting to stay on the lead lap in the final stage.  Kyle Busch finished 26th for Joe Gibbs Racing.  Busch struggled, but he will need to regroup heading into Bristol.  Tyler Reddick while leading saw trouble for Richard Childress Racing.  Reddick finished 35th, after not being able to continue after getting into the wall.  Kevin Harvick finished 36th, Harvick is in a must-win situation to advance to the round of 12 for Stewart-Haas Racing.

(Bubba Wallace burning it down)

Today’s top finishers were Bubba Wallace in 1st for 23XI Racing.  Denny Hamlin is in 2nd for Joe Gibbs Racing.  Christopher Bell in 3rd for Joe Gibbs Racing, followed by Alex Bowman in 4th for Hendrick Motorsports.  Martin Truex Jr. is in 5th for Joe Gibbs Racing.  William Byron for Hendrick Motorsports in 6th, followed by Ross Chastain for Trackhouse Racing in 7th.  Kyle Larson for Hendrick Motorsports in 8th, followed by Ryan Blaney in 9th for Team Penske.  Daniel Suarez finished 10th for Trackhouse Racing.  Honorable mentions go to Chase Elliott of Hendrick Motorsports in 11th.  Austin Cindric for Team Penske in 12th, along with Chase Briscoe in 13th for Stewart-Haas Racing.  Austin Dillon for Richard Childress Racing in 14th, and lastly Chris Buescher in 15th for RFK Racing.

(Wallace in Victory Lane)

Let’s go through today’s race.   Denny Hamlin was busted for pit road interference, as a tire rolled through another team’s pit box on a pit stop.  Hamlin was able to rebound from this issue, this is now the 34th penalty collected by the #11 team this season.  Most in the Cup Series continue to belong to the #11 team.  Kevin Harvick, who is now in a must-win situation heading into Bristol, saw trouble today.  Harvick was pinched into the wall, as Ross Chastain and Bubba Wallace were racing for position.  As a result, Harvick got up into the wall, which ended his afternoon early.  Martin Truex Jr. got up into the wall in turn 1, and 2 during stage 1.  While leading, Tyler Reddick saw trouble as a tire went down on his #8 machine.  Reddick was not able to continue, as he must have a great race at Bristol.  Ty Gibbs had a tire issue on the back straightaway.  Gibbs damaged the right side of his car heavily, as he was not able to continue.  Christopher Bell won stage 1 for Joe Gibbs Racing.  Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who’s struggled all weekend with handling in his #47 car saw trouble this afternoon.  Stenhouse slammed the wall, just as he did on Saturday during the practice session.  Kyle Busch and Daniel Suarez were both hit with equipment interference penalties.  Kyle Busch’s afternoon also ended early, as coming off of turn 4 Busch spun out and slammed the outside wall.  Busch spun through the trioval grass, but his afternoon was over.  In the early laps of stage 2, on a restart after a caution, the field stacked up heading into turn 1.  Harrison Burton, Aric Almirola, and Corey LaJoie all spun, as the field bunched up.  There was no room heading into the turn, as contact was made.  Alex Bowman won stage 2 for Hendrick Motorsports.

In my opinion, today was great.  Kansas delivered once again this year.  It was good to see Bubba Wallace pick up his 2nd career win.  Tires were an issue once again, as the afternoon went on.  Bristol should be fun next weekend.  Taking all action into consideration I’d rate today’s race a 9.3 out of 10.
