Monday Afternoon Racing: Dover Race Review and Analysis

Racing in Delaware, on a Monday! The Nascar Cup Series visited Dover Motor Speedway, after a rained out Sunday, for the Wurth 400.  Martin Truex Jr., took home the checkered flag for Joe Gibbs Racing, after leading 68 laps.  The 42-year old joins Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kyle Busch, William Byron, Joey Logano, Tyler Reddick, Kyle Larson, and Christopher Bell as the only drivers locked into the playoffs.

An afternoon filled with racing, rubber appliance, the reputation of Ross Chastain, and Hendrick Motorsports dominance, the New Jersey native Truex Jr., collected his 33rd career win, sweeping the weekend for the Truex family last name after a first career win from his younger brother Ryan came in the Xfinity race. With a win at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Busch Light Clash in February, this is his first points-paying win of the season, after holding off Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney in the final restart.

Nicknamed M.T.J, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver snaps his 54-race winless streak, as Ross Chastain in an eventful afternoon, comes in 2nd for Trackhouse Racing leading 98 laps.  Ryan Blaney for Team Penske, who has been upfront weekly, has yet to collect a victory in the ‘23 season.  Unfortunate circumstances preventing the drive to victory lane, credits Blaney at Dover his third top-10 in the last three weeks, coming home 3rd for Team Penske.

William Byron slots in 4th for Hendrick Motorsports, after pacing the field with 193 laps at the helm. Denny Hamlin crosses the line 5th for Joe Gibbs Racing, as teammate Christopher Bell follows in suit, in 6th.  Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing is awarded 7th, with RFK Racing co-owner Brad Keselowski, crossing the line 8th, as RFK’s Chris Buescher is right behind in 9th.

Rounding out the top-10 is Josh Berry in substitution for the injured Alex Bowman, for Hendrick Motorsports, with teammate Chase Elliott coming home 11th.

Continuing the list of honorable mentions is Bubba Wallace in 12th for 23XI Racing, as rookie Ty Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing is finding stride in 13th.  Spire Motorsports’ Corey LaJoie is credited 14th, alongside Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in 15th for JTG Daughtery Racing in a stellar afternoon points afternoon.

With a set of top-20s, Erik Jones has pieced together consecutive weekends, this time finishing 16th for Legacy Motor Club, as Harrison Burton for the Wood Brothers, collects a 20th place finish, or better for the first time since the Bristol Dirt race.

Looking to rebound next weekend is Trackhouse Racing’s Daniel Suarez, Kyle Larson of Hendrick Motorsports, Joey Logano of Team Penske, Chase Briscoe for Stewart- Haas Racing, and Legacy Motor Club’s rookie, Noah Gragson.

The biggest storyline of the afternoon was Ross Chastain’s notorious, and now frequent mistakes that jeopardize fellow competitors.  The latest issue was with Rick Ware Racing’s Brennan Poole.  Heading into turn 1, Chastain connected with the back bumper of Poole, sending his #15 for a ride, and collecting Kyle Larson.

Another bold, eager, and unwarranted move, Chastain is at fault once again for an on-track incident that is deemed a common ordeal, which has become the norm every time the #1 isn’t on the receiving end of a caution.  Although he is the regular season points leader, Chastain’s dominance performance-wise won’t hold for too long, as he continues to collect issues with fellow drivers each weekend.

Now headed towards the heartland, the excitement is building.  Kansas Speedway has put on an exceptional set of racing twice a year, which is being labeled by many as one of the better intermediate tracks that the next-gen car has performed on. Look for Toyota, most notably 23XI Racing to be strong after sweeping both races in 2022.  As well as Trackhouse Racing, and Team Penske to be upfront for most of the afternoon.

Returning from a few weekends off is the Craftsman Truck Series.  Practice and qualifying will begin at 12:05pm ET in the afternoon, with the Heart of America 200, Saturday night at 8:00pm ET on FS1. The Xfinity Series will have the weekend off, and return at Darlington Raceway for Throwback weekend. The Nascar Cup Series’ practice and qualifying will begin at 5:05pm ET Saturday evening, followed by the AdventHealth 400 at 3:00pm ET, Sunday only on FS1.
